How to calculate what you need on your final
Your final exam is worth a set slice of your grade — the rest is everything you've already done. So the math is: how high does the final have to be to pull your whole grade up to your target?
Where weight is your final's share as a decimal (30% → 0.30). The calculator above does this for you, and also shows what you'd need for an A, B, C, or D so you can pick a realistic target.
Example
needed = ( 90 − 88 × 0.70 ) ÷ 0.30 = 94.7% on the final.
Aim for a B (80%) instead and you'd only need a 61.3% — a much calmer study week.
Frequently asked questions
How much is my final exam worth?
It's in your syllabus under the grading breakdown — finals are usually 20–50% of your grade. If your class is on Canvas, that weight is already set, and Sequoia can read it for you.
What if I need more than 100%?
Your target isn't reachable from the final alone. Aim for the highest realistic score and ask about extra credit or a curve. The calculator flags this automatically.
Can I calculate this for all my classes at once?
Yes — that's exactly what Sequoia does. It pulls every course from Canvas, shows what you need in each, and ranks what to study first. Free to start.
